About American Malinois

Producing the Finest Working Belgian Malinois in the World

Mission Statement

It is the mission of our family and our training partners to produce the finest working Malinois in the world.

We breed dogs capable of performing at the highest levels of Military and Law Enforcement standards, while also having the stability, and calmness to be reliable as a personal protection dog for an executive, a high profile individual, or a family guardian.

After more than 30 years of training, breeding, and working multiple performance breeds, we firmly believe a well-bred Malinois represents the apex of the working dog. There is nothing better.

Within the Malinois breed exists a wide spectrum of type and temperament. Everyone has heard the sayings about them if you have done any research. "They need 3 hours a day of exercise!" "They are crazy dogs — fur missiles" and "You should not get one." While in some cases the above may all be true, it doesn't have to be. You must first start with proper genetics and that is the foundation. Then, with some basic ground rules and boundaries, they are amazing companions, and very manageable.

A HUGE part of making sure you find a dog that adds to your life, instead of a dog that is just one more problem to manage is selecting the right dog for the right owner. A dog that is genetically wired to be on the field of battle in Afghanistan, is probably not the dog you should have in your living room, although a few can do that. To put it to an automobile analogy:

  • Tier 1 — Those dogs are Formula One race cars. Absolutely inappropriate for a personal protection dog.
  • Tier 2 — The next level down is a Ferrari, still super fun, fast and exciting, but you can take it to the grocery store if you need to, and it is much more safe and manageable.
  • Tier 3 — One level below that is a more calm, social dog with medium drive, and handler sensitivity. Let's call this your Lamborghini Urus. Still sexy, still fast, but much more enjoyable everyday.

The key is to find what Tier is the fit for you, and make the right fit.

Most breeders use European imports — particularly KNPV and Ring sport dogs as the pinnacle of Malinois. Others champion IGP (Schutzhund) bloodlines as royalty.

Our foundation dogs trace back to these systems. We respect what each brings to the breed.

We respect the pedigree purist committed to scientific linebreeding.
We respect the performance breeder bold enough to go against the grain.
We respect historic bloodlines and proven dogs standing in front of us today.

Why "American" Malinois?

The name honors the heritage and foundation of the breed — while boldly declaring a new era.

The American way has always been this:
Take the best from around the world and make it faster, better, stronger.

Yes, Europe has extraordinary, time-tested programs. We respect them — our heritage.

But we also remember when Ferrari dominated Le Mans — until Henry Ford II partnered with Carroll Shelby and ended Ferrari's six-year winning streak. 4 years in a row.

That is the energy we bring.

Integrity in Selection

No matter how carefully you breed, variance exists within every bloodline, and even every litter. Linebred, outcrossed, or "scatterbred" — individuals differ.

Integrity demands acknowledging those differences.

You should not force a dog to "fit" with a buyer just because that is what you have available. You match the right dog to the right home and the right mission.

It is not only my opinion, but the opinion of some of the top breeders and competitors in the world that most so called "personal protection dogs" or "green dogs" sold to law enforcement are wash outs from the sport dog world. In fairness, these are usually very well bred European dogs that at some point had the promise of making the podium in their respective dog sport. Usually French Ring, IGP, or possibly a KNPV dog. For one reason or the other, the dog could not perform to the level required. These dogs often have hundreds of hours of training, and are sold for pennies on the dollar. Police departments and breeders buy these dogs, and then put varying levels of training on them and "repurpose" them as Personal Protection or Police dogs for a premium price.

There is nothing inherently wrong with this approach. In fact, it has been working for years, and will continue to be a huge part of filling the growing need for Law Enforcement and Personal Protection dogs. You can get amazing dogs this way. We just choose to do things differently.

We raise one litter at a time — in our home.

We take notes on each puppy's behavior. They wrestle with our children. They chase chickens. They meet delivery drivers. They go into public early.

Some show early defensive instincts. We get to watch them develop their awareness. We can watch for their social confidence, and gauge their level of stability in public. Some show extreme prey drive and are tagged for certain purposes only. Certain young dogs show a keen sensitivity to situations and people and seem to be always thinking. On and on. You have to watch them every day, not pick them up at the airport at 2 years old to really know them.

We know our dogs.

There is one thing we can do that very few others can. Raise them and proof them around young children. Our dogs are fed, watered, loved on and played with every day by kids ages 1 to 12. A bunch of them. Most trainers might have their dogs around a couple kids here and there, but rarely, if ever have kids picking up their bones, tackling them, and running and screaming in the yard while they are off leash. Most breeders and trainers don't see the dog growl or hackle up around kids once or twice and say "yeah, they are good with kids." That's not good enough.

The same goes for other animals — they need to be around other dogs of all sizes, cats, squirrels, and be tested in these situations, and trained if necessary. They don't have to love them, but they can't turn into an untrained savage and go after them either.

We can specifically train for livestock if required.

Customized Training for Client Needs

We do not simply sell dogs, we customize them for the job.

Farm dogs learn livestock neutrality, working in and around side by sides and farm equipment, environmental conditioning to extreme hot or cold, snake avoidance, long distance off leash control.

City dogs learn elevators, crowds, sirens, hotel lobbies, dealing with unruly Goldendoodles, navigating tight spaces, airport security, and numerous other scenarios.

Stability Over Chaos

We are not breeding for reckless violence or uncontrolled intensity. There was a time when "all gas, no brakes" dogs flooded the market — wild, screaming imports that could survive heavy-handed, inexperienced handlers.

They were needed for that era.

But the world has changed.

Modern working dog training has evolved. We now understand how to develop behaviors through instinct, clarity, and relationship, not just force.

We are breeding for:

  • Absolute Stability
  • Clear-headed Confidence
  • Full-Octane Active Aggression — On Command

Our dogs think.
They hit hard.
They recover quickly.

If a dog cannot have a tug taken away by my 7-year-old, it does not belong in our program, but it also needs to be able to flip the switch and stop a loud, violent intruder without hesitation.

While many behaviors can be masked, managed, or "fixed" through training, we are selecting for genetic stability. True confidence. Clear nerves.

What good is a dog that must be caged or muzzled unless it is time to work? When the unexpected happens, that dog needs to be present — not locked away in a kennel.

We breed for handler-sensitive, calm, powerful dogs with stable nerves — dogs that don't need to run ten miles a day or destroy your property to be fulfilled.

It does not have to be that way anymore.

Our Highest Calling

Our top priority will always be Tier 1 Military and Law Enforcement partners.

It does not pay well.
It involves red tape and high demands. They are very particular.

We do it because we believe in it.

Providing elite canines to those risking their lives to protect others is not just business.

It is an honor.

Out of each litter there is that 1 or 2 dogs that belongs in the highest service, and we want to put them to work protecting our communities.
